• The piñata is a hollow papier maché object covered in colored paper, typically filled with candy. It is hung from above, such as from a branch of a tree. Taking turns, each blindfolded celebration participant gets to strike at it with a stick until it is broken open and the candy falls out for everyone.
• It is thought that piñatas originated in China. It then spread to Spain and then to North America in the 16th Century, where it became an integral part of celebrations.
• Piñatas come in all shapes and sizes!

PERFORATED PAPER
PAPEL PICADO
THE TRADITION
Papel Picado is made by folding brightly colored tissue paper and traditionally using fierritos, a type of chisel, to create holes that then form a pattern when the paper is opened. The finished papers are then strung together to create long strings of colored paper, and hung from the ceiling or between trees and poles.
